I am so excited to share that we have decided to invest in more peonies for the flower farm. Peony roots can be an expensive up front cost and then you have the long wait until they are mature enough to cut on. Typically around year 3 the roots have established enough that you can start harvesting the blooms. Three years! That is a long time to wait for flowers but in the waiting you are allowing the roots to settle into their long term home and ultimately give you more flowers in the future. It is a decision between short and long term gain. I will try my hardest to wait but just maybe harvest a couple blooms in year two 😉 Just like with most flowers there are hundreds of varieties and color variations to choose from. All of them ranging pretty significantly in cost. After much research, Eric and I decided to go with many of the tried and true classics. It is hard to find a prettier peony than the classic Sarah Bernhardt variety pictured above. Her elegant pink ruffles is what everyone thinks of when they think of a peony. She also happens to produce a ton of stems which is one of the reasons why she is so popular. We ordered lots and lots of Sarahs along with some whites, reds, and dark pinks that way we have a great range of colors to offer. If you would like to see pictures of everything we ordered, check out our latest YouTube video HERE. The key to happy peonies comes down to irrigation in the summer time when we tend to forget about them. However, peonies are storing energy and setting blooms for the following year during the hot summer months. Forgetting to properly care for them during that time will be noticed the following spring. So we will need to get our irrigation lines set up next spring and try not to forget about them when we are distracted harvesting buckets of sunflowers 🙂 These wonderful peonies are an investment in the future of our flower farm as we hope to still be growing wonderful flowers in year 2025 and beyond. Now we all have to sit back and be patient together. For His Glory, Alex |
