Valentine’s Day is a Bummer

As a flower farmer, Valentine’s Day timing is quite the bummer. To have a floral centric holiday during the winter is frustrating. The Lord did not design flowers to grow in winter. The ground, the trees, the plants are resting and preparing for another year of growth. So in order to have flowers they have to either be 1. Expensively forced inside or in heated greenhouses or 2. Imported from international locations.

Unfortunately imports are what are most often available. We’ve talked before about the issue with international flowers but to name the big ones: they are absolutely covered in pesticides in order to get through our inspection process, they are grown by close to slave labor in many places, they are so genetically engineered the roses don’t even have a scent anymore, the choices are limited bc these flowers are often cut weeks in advance before you buy them and therefore have to exist outside of water for long periods of time, and lastly the money goes to these overseas corporations and not local businesses.

We have all had the winter tomato that just can’t compare to a fresh vine grown local tomato in the height of summer. Flowers seem the same way to me. The flower flown across the world out of water in February cannot compare to local flower grown in its designed season.

Consider asking your loved one for a “credit” for local flowers this year and come visit our flower stand this spring for some truly gorgeous, long lasting, fresh, grown and designed with love local blooms.
